Welcome to the doorstep of many interlocking, cross-pollinating projects involving voice and devotion… the next place to gather will be around Aotearoa winter solstice, in the beautiful wooden harbour of The Auckland Unitarian Church. There Medena Ensemble – impassioned local vocalists freshly returned from Bulgaria – will share their blend, led in harmony and delightful dissonance, par moi.
Haunting, spirited vocals over hypnotic odd-meter grooves. A meeting of delicacy and power. Original compositions inspired by TUi MAMAKi’s love affair with Bulgaria, spliced with traditional song, these are stories of love, harvest, death & transcendence.
“Ethereal, evocative and purposeful, Mamaki’s performance created a meditative, out-of-world experience. She used her whole body as her instrument, as well as electric guitar and tampura. The lyrics were poetic, and the show felt like it came from an ancient time. Truly transporting!” ~ Best Music” at Whangarei Fringe Festival in 2022
