ACAPOLLiNATiONS sing to their grandmothers…
Delighted to have received “Best Music” at Whangarei Fringe Festival 2022
BEST MUSIC AWARD: For a truly outstanding musical experience.
WINNER: The Moon and the Machine (Songs from Beneath the Hood of a Mother)
“Ethereal, evocative and purposeful, Tui Mamaki’s performance created a meditative, out-of-world experience. The judges were blown away by her vocal skills, which felt different from anything else that was presented. She used her whole body as her instrument, as well as electric guitar and tampura. The lyrics were poetic, and the show felt like it came from an ancient time. Truly transporting.”

Haunting, spirited vocals over hypnotic odd-meter grooves. A meeting of delicacy and power. Original compositions inspired by TUi MAMAKi’s love affair with Bulgaria, spliced with traditional song, these are stories of love, harvest, death & transcendence.
TUi MAMAKi is a vocal explorer, performer, composer/arranger, born in France, raised in Aotearoa/NZ and often found in Bulgaria. She can thank her musically adventurous troubadour family for giving her a taste for sounds from far-away places. In following her voice, she has traveled to Pay Basque, India and the Balkans to study traditional vocal techniques and repertoire.
